If you are concerned about your child's progress in reading and writing, live in the Nottinghamshire or Leicestershire areas and think he/she may be dyslexic or have specific learning difficulties, then contact THE EDUCATION CENTRE in West Bridgford, Nottingham.

We offer in-depth dyslexia assessments for children aged between 4 and 16 years, to identify their learning problems. Tuition is available in literacy for children aged between 4 and 16 years, and in primary mathematics for children aged between 5 and 11 years. We offer one-to-one tuition to both dyslexic children and those with other learning difficulties.

The Centre is run by Ann Davies and Antoinette Vella, both of whom have Masters Degrees in Education in Literacy from the University of Sheffield. They also have specialist diplomas for teaching pupils who are dyslexic or have other language-based learning difficulties. Ann has worked with dyslexic children for more than twenty years while Antoinette worked previously with children in the Early Years Montessori Schools.

The Centre uses both traditional and computer-based learning methods to help the pupils. We are continually investing in the most up-to-date computerised learning packages, as well as other multi-sensory resources. We select the resources to meet the pupil's specific needs and aim to motivate and engage the pupil's interest.

Our concern is for the whole child. The child who is failing in reading and writing often becomes despondent, lacks self-confidence, begins to dislike school, is aware of his/her problems and needs help. Individual lessons targeted at your child's specific needs can ease the problems caused by dyslexia, and other learning problems, help re-build self confidence and give renewed hope to the child with difficulties. We also have considerable experience of children who are dyspraxic or have semantic pragmatic disorders.

Each child who attends the Centre is regarded as unique, is treated with respect and is encouraged to develop whatever talents he/she possesses. Parents' views are valued and encouraged. We regard parents as partners in our work with the children. We work with you and your child so that together changes can be brought about.

In 1999 we were acclaimed by "The Year Of Reading" judges as a Centre of Excellence for promoting reading. The award enabled us to enlarge our audio lending library and we now have a large selection of audio books for the age range 4 to 16.

Ann & Antoinette have published the following teaching materials: "Times Up for Times Tables", "Dictionary Skills" and "Vivid Vowels". A new publication in process is an in-depth study of teaching approaches to help young dyspraxic children achieve their dream to write. In addition, we are members of the National Executive Committee of PATOSS, a professional association for teachers working with pupils with specific learning difficulties. Antoinette is a trialler for BEAM Mathematics, while Ann is a tutor to post-graduate students studying with the Hornsby International Dyslexia Centre on their Distance Learning Programme.

If you would like further details it would be best, in the first instance, to contact either Ann or Antoinette by telephone on 0115-914-0199. Please leave a message if the answering machine is activated and we shall contact you as soon as we can. We look forward to hearing from you.
