Bulcote Village Gardens

Open to the public .. .. .. .. .. ..

on Sunday, 12th July, 1998

between 2.00 and 5.00 p.m.

(In aid of the British Red Cross Society)

There will be eight neighbouring gardens open to the public providing an abundant variety of plants and planting schemes to be viewed. In sequence starting from the centre of the village at Walnut Tree House progressing northerly towards the church and returning on the opposite side of the road, the gardens in detail are as follow:

Walnut Tree House: A traditional cottage garden with herbaceous borders, a vegetable and fruit garden, a pretty pond and paddock.

Bridleways: A garden created from paddock land, featuring beautiful beds, a rockery, mature trees and shrubs and an interesting herb garden.

The Lodge: A listed building with a large mature garden featuring beautiful herbaceous borders, a rose garden, many shrubs, a naturalised paddock with a turkey oak and a large pond.

West Wall: Lawns and herbaceous borders.

The Paddock: A pretty village garden with a delightful naturalised driveway, shrubs, borders and trees.

Ivy House: A charming small English country garden with herbaceous borders, shrubs and trees with clematis, roses and ivy clothing the walls.

Ivy Cottage: A pretty cottage garden containing borders, herbaceous plants and shrubs plus old rose climbers around the cottage doorway.

The Manor: "Without prejudice" it is with regret that this garden has been withdrawn following the rift that arose following the successful planning application for a Nursing-Home-style house on adjoining greenbelt land. It is understood that the applicant's son was at the time chairman of Newark & Sherwood District Council's Planning Committee, but this obviosly bore no weight despite lesser applications (such as a neighbour's kitchen extension) being refused. Similarly, the owner (who is a Nottingham magistrate) won the contract for building the new Nottingham Magistrates' Court - what an amazing coincidence!

(All the above descriptions are courtesy of the Nottingham Garden Scheme's leaflet)

A combined fee of £2.50 permits entry into all of the gardens (Senior Citizens £1.50, Under 12s free)

Interspersed among the gardens will be many stalls providing plants, books, toys, bric-a-brac, teas, etc.
